Chris and I always try to take the time to reflect on our favorite parts of trips and have found that one of the highlights of traveling for us is getting to immerse ourselves in the culture. Our unexpected must-do is always visiting the produce markets to see what locals buy, how they shop and picking up fun snacks without a clue what they are! We’re not really ones for historic places – not that we don’t like them (we actually spend a lot of our Netflix/Amazon time watching historic documentaries!) – there’s just something about the thousands of other tourists around us at those “must see” spots that we personally find too distracting for us to enjoy when traveling. Of course, many people do enjoy seeing those places and there are great landmarks to visit (I hear Mount Fuji is incredible!) but it really depends on what kind of traveler you are – everyone’s different! Over the years, we’ve realized that we truly love learning more about the pop culture – what the locals do, where they eat, shop and find entertainment! Don’t get me wrong, these places also get tons of tourists (after all, we are tourists, too) but it’s different from being mixed in with the locals and being completely surrounded by fellow tourists with not a single local in sight, you know? 😉 but I digress… we loved doing the Shibuya Scramble, running across the notorious Shibuya Crossing cross walk that endures half a million pedestrians a day… or wandering the streets of Shinjuku, drinking vending machine beers or munching on yakitori from little huts down dark alleys (Memory Lane/Piss Alley) and falling head over heels for the cutest hidden neighborhoods like Kagurazaka and Daikan-yama!
