1. How do you determine what you will wear that day?
I’m quite moody and I’m very sensitive to climate changes. I usually determine what I’ll wear by my mood, the weather and of course what events/activities are planned for the day. So if it’s cold, I have to go to work and I’m exhausted from the previous day – expect to see a lot of black. If I’m in a good mood, it’s a nice day out and even though I’m going to work, I have a lunch date planned with one of my favorite people – expect to see bright colors, ruffles and a big’ol smile on my face lol 😉
2. Do you plan outfits out in advance for a whole week, month, weekend?
Now, I seriously wish I was that organized… I would say I almost never plan ahead of time – even for special events like parties, holidays and weddings. For special events I usually have a general idea of what I’ll wear for example, if I bought a particular dress for such occasion, I won’t know what I’ll accessorize with (shoes, belts, jewelry, bag) until the day of. On a typical day, if I have time to lie around in bed before getting up, I’ll brainstorm ideas and looks. Most of the time, I get up, stare at my closet and if I can’t think of anything, I’ll go brush my teeth, wash my face and then go back to staring at my closet a little longer. I usually continue with this pattern, alternating between things I need to do in the morning (coffee, hair, makeup) and staring at my closet until I have a game plan. I usually zero in on one particular item whether it’s a dress, top, bottom, shoes, belt etc. and then build my look around that. I’ll admit, it’s usually shoes. The only “planning” that occurs are usually happy accidents. My wardrobe “happy accidents” occur when I put together an outfit, look in the mirror, and realize the outfit I put together is way too cute for the day’s events. I usually make a mental note (or hang all the items together and set them aside) to wear on another day where I have something planned more suitable for that look. Organized chaos, right? =D
3. Do you have any specific way of tracking outfits and items already worn so you don’t repeat?
I think that’s what’s so great about blogging… although I don’t post every single outfit I wear every day, it does help remind me what I recently wore as well as encourages me to change-up my looks, often. Aside from that, I have no real way to track my outfits other than my unreliable memory… and occasionally my husband Lol.
4. How do you discover new combinations of items in your closet? (Trial try-ons? Hanging items together?)
I definitely try on multiple combinations every morning – trial and error. I also love flipping through fashion magazines, visiting fellow fashion blogs and surfing through lookbook.nu to get combination ideas but a lot of time this results in more shopping I shouldn’t be doing because I’ll spot something new I don’t have in my closet. Tough stuff!
5. To streamline the process for 2011 what is one new thing you can do to cut down your dressing time?
I’m not sure there’s anything I can do and I’m not sure there’s anything I want to do about it. I’ve tried preplanning in the past and I almost always end up changing my mind when it’s time to wear the planned outfit (because I’m so moody, remember?). I think the sometimes surprisingly quick or sometimes outrageously long time it takes me to settle on a look is who I am. My husband actually brought this up the other day and even he said, although it sometimes frustrates him (especially when we’re running late to our dinner reservations), he loves that I have such a “passion for fashion” and respects it. Sweet, huh? I know, I’m a lucky girl.

January 17, 2011 at 9:14 amWow your husband is very understanding to you being late for reservations. I don’t think most women would have a guy be so understanding about all of that. – Katy
January 14, 2011 at 8:57 amI’m definitely blessed… now if only I could get him to be a little more excited about taking the pictures of me =P
January 17, 2011 at 9:19 amPreplanning can work wonders, but if you know that your mood changes and so your desired outfit changes, it doesn’t really make sense. It sounds like you have a system that works for you and an understanding husband to go along with it!
